Narayanpur: Security forces on Friday gunned down at least 28 suspected Naxals in a fierce encounter in forests of Narayanpur district of Bastar division. According to sources, an encounter broke out in Abhujhmarh forests alongside Narayanpur and Dantewada districts around 1 PM. A joint team of District Reserve Guards and Special Task Force from Narayanpur and Dantewada districts were put out on anti-naxal operation, based on specific inputs received about the presence of Naxalites in Govel, Nendur, Thulthuli villages in Orccha and Barsur.
Abujhmaad straddles between Maharashtra and Chattisgarh and is also known as the unknown hill as the 6000 SqKm of thick forest has not been surveyed since the British era. The jungle is believed to be the e epicenter for Naxal activities and if sources are to be believed it still houses dozens of senior cadres CPI (Naxals).
While the encounter is still going on, Dantewada Superintendent of Police Gaurav Rai said that the Maoists have been cornered in the jungles of Thulthuli and Gevdi villages, south of Abujhmaad. A statement issued by police in the afternoon revealed that a huge cache of weapons, including an AK-47 rifle and one SLR (self-loading rifle), were recovered from the encounter spot.
“Details of the exact number of weapons and ammunition are yet to be ascertained. The identification process of the deceased Maoists will be done on Saturday,” the SP added.
