Katghora: In the quest for the elusive Golden Mahseer, a renowned scientist from England has embarked on a two-day journey to the Bangodauban area along the Hasdeo River in Chhattisgarh. Dr. Mark Everard is conducting surveys in the Buka region, Golden Island, and its surrounding areas to locate this revered fish species. The Golden Mahseer, often referred to as the “Lion of Clean Water,” holds cultural significance, and efforts are underway across the country to preserve and conserve its habitat.
District Forest Officer Kumar Nishant of Katghora revealed that Dr. Mark Everard is engaging with local fishermen in the Bangodauban area, delving into discussions about the Golden Mahseer. The focus of his survey is to gather valuable insights for the meaningful conservation of this iconic species. Known scientifically as Tor putitora, this fish species is also recognized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which recently classified it as a vulnerable species.
The Golden Mahseer, colloquially known as the “Lion of Indian Rivers,” is bestowed with the scientific name Tor putitora and can weigh up to a maximum of 50 kilograms. It is regarded as a flagship species, symbolizing the health of river ecosystems. Notably, the IUCN has raised concerns about its declining population, attributing the species to a near-threatened status.
This remarkable fish is found in the rivers of India, Pakistan, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. Among its various subspecies, the Putitora Tor and the Golden Mahseer are particularly favored, thriving in the pristine Himalayan regions. Often referred to as the “Ground Tiger” or Thick-Lipped Mahseer, this species can reach a maximum weight of 50 to 60 kilograms.
In light of its ecological importance and the need for conservation, Dr. Mark Everard’s scientific expedition holds promise for contributing to the understanding and protection of the Golden Mahseer in the Bangodauban region and beyond. As the scientific community collaborates with local stakeholders, the goal is to ensure the sustainable coexistence of this majestic fish and the preservation of its natural habitat.
