The Assembly Speaker of Chhattisgarh, former Chief Minister Raman Singh, has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to express appreciation for the progress India has made towards eradicating Naxalism and what he referred to as “an important day in this country” (March 31, 2026), which restored hope and signified (a new beginning for India).
Raman Singh credited the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the determination of Amit Shah for the dismantling of a decades-old extremist ideology that has deeply impacted many parts of India (especially in tribal areas). Singh discussed how these anti-democratic ideologies behind Naxalism resulted in violence, thousands of innocent lives lost, and an impediment to development from Naxalbari (West Bengal) through the entire Bastar District of Chhattisgarh, where there is extreme poverty and migration despite great potential.
He explained that state-specific views by previous governments delayed a unified national response to Naxalism. While former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh viewed Naxalism as a major threat, he did not take sufficient action.
Raman Singh also noted how grassroots development efforts (specifically the Salwa Judum movement led by Mahendra Karma) did not receive adequate support from the federal government. According to him, Modi was responsible for initiating a decisive strategy to counter Naxalism which started with Modi’s leadership in 2014 but was accelerated after Amit Shah took over as Home Minister of India in 2019.
Singh went on to praise Amit Shah’s leadership by directly comparing him to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, describing him as a transformational leader who turned previously unattainable targets into achievable results, and said that his contributions to India’s internal security will be recorded forever in history.
