Mahasamund: A multiple-choice question in a Class 4 English exam has raised controversy as the question in an English test paper in government schools in Chhattisgarh’s Mahasamund district had an option to tick ‘Ram’. It has triggered controversy and protests after the word ‘Ram’ was listed as one of the options for the question, “What is the name of Ram’s dog?”.

The question, in the half-yearly exam held on Wednesday (January 7, 2026), asked Class 4 students to identify the name of ‘Mona’s dog’ with options being ‘Bala’, ‘Sheru’, ‘No One’ and ‘Ram’.

It triggered protests from right-wing outfits in front of the District Education Officer (DEO), with Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) district head Harshwardhan Chandrakar outside District Education Officer’s (DEO) office. Calling the question inappropriate, they are seeking the arrest and dismissal of those who prepared the question for the examination.

In response, DEO Vijay Kumar Lahre issued a statement expressing regret over the incident. He explianed that it was printing error. “The relevant question was selectd and sent for printing, but instead of that question paper, a different one was printed”, said Lahre. Furthermore, he assured that corrective measures were taken immediately upon discovery.

Meanwhile, the education department of the state has issued notice to the printing vendor, seeking explanation.
