A book release and felicitation program was held on the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas day at the house of the Speaker of the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly, in Shankar Nagar. Two books about the lives and works of the Indian diaspora were published on the occasion, 10 outstanding representatives of the Chhattisgarhi diaspora were honoured. The Assembly Speaker, Dr. Raman Singh and the Sahitya Akademi Chairman, Shashank Sharma attended the programme, at which the topic of the history and current status of Chhattisgarhi migrants was discussed.
The Pravasi Chhattisgarhiya Bandhutva Manch organised the event and centered on the experiences of the Chhattisgarh natives who had moved to Assam and other areas to find livelihood. The speakers pointed out that these migrants managed to maintain their cultures and identity even though they settled very far away in a country they did not call home.
Speaking at the assembly, Assembly Speaker Dr. Raman Singh said that it is a source of pride that Chhattisgarh people have not only gained fame in India, but also abroad. He claimed that he had witnessed this in his visits to foreign countries. Complimenting Ashok Tiwari and his organisation, Dr. Singh said documenting the data of Chhattisgarh natives who had already settled abroad centuries ago linking them, and bringing such programmes together is a worthy effort. He guaranteed that he would be supportive of such endeavours in future.
Another personal report came through the former Assembly Speaker and leader of the opposition Dr. Charan Das Mahant who said that his ancestors had also left Chhattisgarh in search of employment. His great grandfather had established himself in Assam, and later on his grandfather. He observed that millions of natives of Chhattisgarh today are found in various states in India and also in other countries.
Dr. Mahant also remembered that he had gotten acquainted with people of his home Janjgir region when he visited the United States. He emphasized the necessity to conduct a big research on the diaspora of the Chattisgarhi.
