A political controversy has intensified after opium cultivation was uncovered on the farms of BJP leaders in Samoda and Jhenjhari villages in Durg district. While the Congress party continues to attack the BJP government, BJP MLA Rakesh Sen alleges that opium cultivation began during the Congress government’s tenure.
On Sunday, the police and administration began an operation to destroy opium cultivation. Police personnel were initially deployed to eliminate the large area of cultivation, but due to the time required, the plants were later uprooted using bulldozers. This operation will continue on Monday.
MLA Rakesh Sen said, “Bhupesh Baghel should have come when the seeds were being sown or the saplings were being planted. It’s been reported that farming has been going on in the village for four years, even though the BJP government has been in power for only two years. We are ready to discuss this issue in the Assembly.”
In fact, large-scale cultivation of banned opium was discovered at the farmhouse of BJP leader Vinayak Tamrakar in the village of Samoda-Jhenjhari. Police raided the site and arrested the BJP leader and some laborers from Rajasthan, sending them to jail.
Amidst the crackdown, former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel also visited the poppy fields and inspected them. He criticized the state government, accusing it of promoting drug abuse in the state. The following day, the BJP shared a video on its official social media accounts.
In the video, a man’s voice can be heard saying, “We will put opium in our pockets and sell it.” The BJP Chhattisgarh wrote in the caption, asking who the person who accompanied Bhupesh Baghel to the field was who was saying this.
