Very serious corruption and low quality of construction has been reported in bridge project under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) in Gorna village which is only 4 km of the district headquarters. The contractor has been accused by villagers of constructing using low-quality materials and neglecting basic construction specifications, which makes the structure unsafe and not depending.

The residents have claimed that the under-construction culvert is being constructed without reinforcement, such as the lack of iron rods, and in insufficient amounts of cement, sand, and gravel. The contractor is said to have acted abusively even when the locals inquired about the quality of work and made derogatory statements that only infuriated the locals more.

The village of Gorna, which was previously hit by the Naxal activity had been facing a shortage of basic infrastructure like roads, bridges, schools, and anganwadi centers. As development initiatives finally come to the region the villagers state that the construction of substandard quality is killing their intentions and may lead to their secludedness once again.

The residents fear that the approximately 4 meters long culvert would not support even the initial monsoon rains which would carry away and sever off the transport to the surrounding towns. They have called on the authorities to take an immediate action by investigating and taking stern measures against the contractor and rebuilding the bridge after proper standards.

The problem has evoked a great amount of outrage, the population in the villages is pressing the administration to deliver safe and long-term infrastructure and hold people responsible.
