The tussle goes on in Chhattisgarh over paddy procurement politics. PCC Chief Deepak Baij dares Chief Minister Vishnudeo Sai. Baij raised his concerns against the actual transfer of ₹3,100 lump sum being envisaged as the support price for paddy to the beneficiaries. Addressing a gathering at Mohla Manpur, he said, “If any farmer has got ₹3100 in one installment or if the amount is being paid through counters, let the Chief Minister tell me. If this is true, as an adult, I am prepared to receive any punishment that he feels is appropriate.’”

Baij made these remarks during a protest held by the District Congress at Mohla over alleged mismanagement in the procurement of paddy. Joining the protest, the PCC Chief claimed that the Chhattisgarh government has gone back on its word to farmers. He claimed that the government is discriminating against farmers and conspiring against them in terms of policies implementing paddy procurement.

During his visit Baij also had a discussion with regional workers on electoral plans for the forthcoming urban and panchayat elections. Another important concern he brought out was farmers, where he pointed out the need for people responsible for such decisions to be held to their word and commitments to the agriculture sector.

The scandals has fanned the continuous political discourse, with Baij accusing the government of not mending the procurement deficiencies and bias against farmers. He appealed to the administration to keep in mind the interest of the farming population and utilize its resources without fail to the known extent it had vowed to.

This issue added to the conflict of interest between the ruling state party and the opposition party in Chhattisgarh, wherein procurement of paddy became a central issue in political debate in Chhattisgarh. The prospect of these debates on two issues may also affect the region’s agrarian politics and the election scheduled for the near future.
