Gariaband: After the conclusion of the second phase of voting in Chhattisgarh, security forces were escorting the election team back from the Gariyaband district to safety when they fell into an ambush. Naxals targeted the convoy, planting an improvised explosive device (IED) that resulted in the martyrdom of a brave soldier. The incident occurred in the Bindranawagarh constituency of Gariyaband district. Lance Naik Joginder Singh of the ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) suffered severe injuries as a result of the IED blast during the return journey. Despite being rushed to the Manpur Hospital, the doctors declared him dead.
In a solemn ceremony at the Gariyaband Police Parade Ground, tributes were paid to the fallen soldier with moist eyes and heavy hearts. The police organized a floral tribute ceremony (Pushpanjali Samaroh), attended by various dignitaries including District Collector Akash Chhikara, SP Amit Tukaram Kamble, Abujhmar Arun Shrivastav, and a large contingent of district police, ITBP, and CRPF personnel. They collectively honored the sacrifice of Lance Naik Joginder Singh.
During the ceremony, the senior police officer announced immediate financial assistance of ₹1 lakh for the family of the martyred soldier. The mortal remains of the brave soldier were later dispatched to his home state of Jammu and Kashmir for the last rites.
The tragic incident adds to the ongoing challenges in the region, highlighting the persistent threat of Naxal violence and the risks faced by security forces ensuring the smooth conduct of democratic processes in affected areas. The sacrifice of Lance Naik Joginder Singh serves as a stark reminder of the dedication and bravery exhibited by security personnel in the face of adversity.
