Sukma: In a major success against Naxal forces, the police have achieved a significant victory. Nagesh, a highly rewarded Naxal commander, surrendered before Sukma SP Kiran Chavan, marking a triumph for the state government’s anti-Naxal policy and the awareness campaigns conducted by the forces. The surrendered commander, known as Erra, had an active role in the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) Battalion as the commander of Company Number 2.
Sukma SP Kiran Chavan disclosed that Nagesh Erra, aged 38 and a resident of Jagargunda, had been actively serving as the commander for a considerable time. Notably, he played a significant role in the infamous Tadmetla attack in 2010, where 76 soldiers lost their lives. The surrender comes as a blow to the Naxals, as Erra was a prominent commander in the Bastar region.
According to SP Kiran Chavan, Nagesh grew disillusioned with the hollow ideology of the Naxals, prompting him to abandon their ranks. He expressed faith in the government’s “Naxal Unmulan Neeti” (Naxal eradication policy) and the “Puna Narkom Abhiyan” (Anti-Narcotics Campaign) initiated by Sukma police. This shift reflects a new beginning for Erra, aligning himself with development, security, and trust, moving away from the extremist path.
The surrender of a commander of Nagesh’s stature underscores the impact of the multi-pronged approach employed by the security forces, emphasizing awareness and development alongside stringent actions against extremism. SP Kiran Chavan appealed to other Naxals to reconsider their allegiance to violence and join the mainstream for the greater good of society.
Nagesh Erra’s decision to surrender is seen as a significant development, particularly given his involvement in the Tadmetla attack and his role as a high-ranking Naxal commander. The security forces view this as a positive step toward bringing about a positive change in the region, dismantling the Naxal stronghold, and integrating individuals back into the social fabric. The surrender of Erra highlights the effectiveness of the government’s strategies in curbing Naxal activities and fostering a sense of security and development in the affected regions.
