National Folk Dance Festival; Relevance of Pandavani
Pandavani is a folk dance and ballad form from Chhattisgarh that tells the story of the Pandavas from the Mahabharata. It’s a lively performance that uses dance, music, and lyrics to transport the audience into the world of the Pandavas.
Pandvani is a captivating narrative folk singing style originating from Chhattisgarh, India, primarily depicting tales from the Hindu epic, the Mahabharata. It’s a solo performance, where the lead artist, traditionally a woman, both sings and enacts the epic’s characters and events.
The performance is characterized by its dramatic intensity and expressive storytelling. The singer, using a tambura (a drone string instrument) as a prop, transforms it into various objects – a weapon, a chariot, or a mace – to visually enhance the narrative.
Teejan Bai is the most renowned exponent of Pandvani, elevating the art form to international acclaim. Her powerful voice and emotive expressions bring the Mahabharata’s characters to life, captivating audiences with their heroism, conflicts, and moral dilemmas. Pandvani is not just entertainment; it’s a vibrant cultural tradition that preserves and transmits ancient stories and values.
