The tension began in Ward 23, Bhilai, when vandalism occurred at a temple nearby. According to the complainant, the suspect, named Abdul Sajjad, broke idols and came across one portion of the temple under a Peepal tree when he was seemingly drunk. The temple, a centre of worship for many of the residents in the area, is located along Tulsi Chowra in Atal Awas.
This has infuriated the community. As per reports, members of the Bajrang Dal, besides several local people, took out a procession to the Jamul police station to protest. They wanted the accused harshly dealt with and the police to see that the same act does not happen in the future. Banners came out and the region around the station was tense few minutes when demonstrators gheraoed the scene.
Upon receiving the complaint, including the uproar on social media, police immediately stepped in, and the accused, Abdul Sajjad, was arrested. The officers of the Jamul police station confirmed that law enforcement has commenced. According to Police spokesperson Padmashri Tanwar, Sajjad is under police custody, and a further probe is going on to establish the magnitude and intention of the action.
The protesters were dispersed following the conviction of senior police officers that proper legal action would take place. Nevertheless, the event has raised concerns about sustaining peace in the area and how religious feelings could be respected.
Governments have encouraged the population to be peaceful and not to become victims of rumors that might ignite further tensions. The police have also enhanced patrolling in the sensitive areas to avoid untoward situations.
This is under control already, and the local leaders have requested residents to collaborate with law enforcement and maintain solidarity within the neighborhood.
