Raipur: A middle-aged man created a scene in the state capital on Tuesday by climbing a partially constructed skywalk situated in the middle of the city, threatening self-harm. The man then jumped off the structure and sustained injuries. He complained of being ill-treated for expecting medical treatment by the staff of a government hospital.
Native of Satna, Sujit Kumar, 35, has been under treatment for epilepsy and mental ailment since 2003. He suffered an attack on Sunday and was admitted to BR Ambedkar hospital in Raipur, a state government official said. The man had come to Raipur a few days ago to persuade his wife, who abandoned him along with three children, to return.
On Tuesday, officials said that he created a ruckus inside the hospital for his belongings. He then suddenly ran out and climbed the skywalk structure in a drunken state, situated only a few meters away from the hospital. Kumar hung upside down and started shouting. When he was asked to come down, he demanded to call the SP and collector, while threatening to jump off.
Bystanders saw the man hanging upside down on an eight-foot-high skywalk and rushed to rescue him by spreading sheets under him in case of a fall. A team of fire brigade and police reached the spot in an attempt to rescue. Congress MLA Kuldeep Juneja also rushed to the spot. After half an hour of negotiations and pleading, the man jumped off and sustained injuries on his waist. He was immediately admitted to the hospital and his family was informed. His condition was stated as stable.
