Durg: A massive accident took place on Friday at the Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP), which is one of the biggest steel plants in the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). It happened in Blast Furnace-8, where the sudden explosion of a waste catcher led to a huge explosion and consequent fire.
The deafening boom caused chaos within the premises of the plant, and people, as well as the staff, had to run. This was immediately reported to the management of the steel plant, and fire brigade teams of BSP arrived on the scene. It took almost two hours of serious firefighting before the flames could be controlled.
One of the most important units within the plant is Blast Furnace-8, and its total daily production capacity is 9,000 tonnes of steel. It is a direct hit to the production as the fire has been a blow to operations. Nevertheless, management of the plant has guaranteed that other measures have been put in place to ensure that they do not halt their process and to reduce their losses.
BSP management also instituted a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the explosion and fire soon after the incident. Presently, the cause is still not known, but already, a group of technical experts are already working on the issue. According to officials, the results will aid in eliminating incidences of such mishaps in the future.
Luckily, it did not result in any form of deaths or injuries, and this is a relief. There were, however, complaints aired by local employees over the safety systems incorporated at the plant. They are stating that had the fire not been quickly controlled, far greater damage could have resulted, but the accident raises the possibilities of safety being compromised.
Bhilai Steel Plant is of paramount significance to not only the state of Chhattisgarh but also the whole of India since Bhilai Steel Plant contributes significantly to the national output of steel. Such an accident has renewed the attention of industrial safety at the biggest steel manufacturing facility in India.
