Raipur. The closing ceremony of the Khelo India Tribal Games 2026, hosted for the first time by Chhattisgarh, is taking place today at the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Auditorium. Prior to this grand event, former Indian footballer Baichung Bhutia and world champion boxer Mary Kom held a press conference at the Science College grounds. During the conference, both legendary athletes expressed their views on the sports system and the players.

Baichung Bhutia said that the players have potential, but there are many reasons for the lack of medals. Relying on a single coach, not training the coach, and remaining in the same position for years are major problems. He said that when medals are not coming, there is no point in remaining in their positions. They neither allow anyone to advance nor do they step aside, they simply remain glued to their chairs.

Bhutia also said that athletes are not receiving proper training and better facilities. Until this system is improved, complaints about why medals are not coming will persist.

Meanwhile, world champion boxer Mary Kom said that discipline is essential in sports and timing plays a very important role. How you utilize it depends on you. A major reason for athletes not winning medals despite their potential is that instead of devoting time to the field, athletes spend time on social media. Not sleeping or waking up on time is also a problem. It is also very important for athletes to receive proper training and a proper diet. Pressure is also a major factor, whether it’s from family or society. Handling this pressure is crucial, because if pressure isn’t handled, athletes will lose medals.

She explained that community support also matters a lot. Mary Kom said, “Have you ever noticed how I was trolled after winning so many World Championships? These days, anyone can write anything on social media.”
