Chhattisgarh: The pillars of the police station stand still, announcing its motto – “Paritranaya Sadhunam”, words from Srimad Bhagavad Gita, which means ‘for the uplift of the good and virtuous’. The Jhilmili Police Station is situated in a remote region of Surajpur District in North Chhattisgarh. The charmingly-named police station has ranked 4th among the top 10 best performing police stations in India.
CM Bhupesh Baghel, in his congratulating tweet, referred to the award as a ‘matter of pride’. SI Chitrarekha Sahu and Surajpur SP Rajesh Kukreja received praising words from D.M. Awasthi, the DGP. It’s Sahu’s second stint at Jhilmili Police Station.
She had been posted here between March and May, and later, was brought back in September. “I believe it’s the quick response to incidents that took us to the top 10. As a woman, I feel more sensitive to issues related to the villagers. Also, all our records are updated in files and accounts,” – stated Sahu.
Located at around 25km from Surajpur District Headquarters, the 50-year-old building of the police station needs renovation. But the goodwill it has created among the local populace, subsides the outlook of the Thana Building.
According to Ratanlal Dangi, the IG of Surguja Range, “We try to upgrade all police stations and address cases the best we can. The infrastructure of Jhilmili police station is not up to the mark and it is housed in an old building, but it stood out because of the quick response that people received in the past two years.”
Jhilmili police station has received the award for ‘efficiency addressing cases related to crimes against women and weaker sections’, and property offenses.
