The Kondagaon District Hospital which was once distinguished at the national level due to its service is found to be in a very bad shape today. It is so bad that the operation theatre does not have even basic anesthetic drugs, doctors are compelled to put on gloves that tear when put into use, basic equipment such as sutures, bandages and even paracetamol injections are not available. The ultrasound machine that the hospital uses has not been in operation in several months and the suppliers who are fed up with the delay in receiving their payment have since declined to supply any medicines or equipment on credit.

Doctors know of the ugly truth but talk in low tones since the authorities are not at a place to freely dialogue on matters of administrative failure. Though reports are regularly reported to the state government on meetings, the situation is in most cases ignored with the argument that things are okay. As a matter of fact, the entire healthcare system of the district has been operating within the previous three financial years on borrowed resources.

Only the district hospital is saddled with a debt of ₹9 crore and the Chief Medical and Health Office (CMHO) owes more than ₹1 crore. In total, excellent dues have surpassed 10.17 crores. Local suppliers claim that they are no longer able to supply medicines, equipment, beds or even stationery without payment.

To make the situation worse, the Chhattisgarh Medical Services Corporation Limited (CGMSC) has made very minimal supply of medicines or surgical materials to the district during the last two years. Whatever came was prone to quality problems. In the last one month, essential relief drugs are brought to a grind to a halt. Doctors are still carrying out surgeries, yet even those who are poor are compelled to buy medications externally because of the lack of necessary medications.

It is not just the lack of a few things, the blades to shave patients before the surgery are not available either.

As reported by CMHO R.K. Chaturvedi, the government has been reported to receive outstanding dues of approximately 10.17 crore.
