Bhagirathpura Contaminated Water Deaths: During the budget session of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly, the issue of deaths due to contaminated water in Bhagirathpura, Indore, remained a hot topic. During question hour, Leader of the Opposition Umang Singhar questioned the government on this issue, in response to which the government acknowledged in writing that 20 people have died so far due to an outbreak of contaminated water in the area. However, during the discussion, a heated debate was witnessed between the ruling party and the opposition regarding the death figures and the amount of compensation.
The issue of deaths resonated in the Assembly
Leader of the Opposition Umang Singhar questioned whether the department had timely information about the disease spreading in Bhagirathapura. In response, Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Rajendra Shukla stated that the disease was first reported on December 29, 2025. The government officially acknowledged that 20 people have died so far due to cholera and E. coli infections. A total of 459 people were hospitalized during this period.
Chief Minister’s big announcement on compensation
During the House discussion, when the Leader of the Opposition raised concerns about the high death toll and the low compensation, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav intervened. Recognizing the seriousness of the matter, the Chief Minister stated that this issue transcends politics and should not involve any bias. He announced that the government would now provide a compensation of ₹5 lakh (₹4 lakh) to the families of the deceased. The Chief Minister also clarified that strict action has been taken, including suspending the IAS officer found guilty in this case.
