Bilaspur: The Chhattisgarh High Court has expressed concern about the serious mismanagement seen at Raipur’s Ambedkar Hospital. Considering a news report on how patients were suffering at a hospital, the High Court first told the Secretary of the Health and Family Welfare Department to provide an affidavit describing the situation. The state government’s reaction came after the due date.

The Chief Justice and other members of the Division Bench were unhappy at the hearing on May 27 with how the media reported the incident. It was discovered in the report that patients with fractures, critical injuries, and cancer must wait up to 20 days before having surgery. It is common for patients to be brought into surgery but not treated, which places their lives in danger.

Relatives of those being treated say that doctors and staff rarely explain long waits and may even suggest that they go to private hospitals if they question the waiting time. Because private care is too expensive for many, families camp in the hospital for weeks until the patient needs surgery.

There are 29 operating theatres of different sizes in the hospital, but just 1–2 surgeons are meant to cover all procedures, so patients are often left waiting. The hospital treats many people who have suffered accidents and those with serious health problems each day, most of whom have waited more than a month for care.

Because the case is serious, the court required a detailed affidavit from the Health Secretary. In the court session, Advocate General Prafull N. Bharat sought a postponement, saying they are still preparing their affidavit. The extension was given by the bench, and the next hearing is set for June 10, 2025.
