Sarguja: This morning, the shocking news arrived in Sarguja district in Chhattisgarh: a farmer couple died after coming into contact with a high-voltage electric current. This fatal accident happened in Mudesha Avaradugu village within the folds of Gandhinagar police station.

On initial reports, it turned out that the victims were Kariman Sai Gond (56) and his wife Dilkunwar Gond (52), and residents of the same village. The couple went to their paddy field that was next to their house at around 2.30 PM on a Tuesday afternoon to weed out seedlings. Owing to little water in the field, Kariman Sai was trying to activate the water pump by drawing it to a household power socket.

Sadly, he got a treacherous electric shock immediately after opening the wire and crashing to the ground. The existing spread quickly through the wet field, which electrocuted his wife as well, who was too close to him. Both succumbed because they were unable to receive any assistance.

After getting the information, police and electricity department teams breezed into the scene. The police recorded a case and handed over the bodies to post-mortem investigation. Held preliminary studies indicate that the accident happened as a result of a careless electric connection touch, which brought out the lack of proper safety precautions in agricultural activities.

The fatal accident has struck the entire village, and relatives and neighbors are shocked over the sad incident of the death of a farmer couple. Officials will most likely enquire on whether there was any dereliction of duty when maintaining the power lines and also whether it was a safety failure. The accident is an ugly reminder of the risks people in rural settlements are taking when they operate makeshift electrical installations.
