Bijapur: Along the Bijapur-Dantewada border in Chhattisgarh, tension was gripped as reports came about an encounter between Naxal insurgents and the police forces that was taking place in the national park area. As per the preliminary reports, the gun battle started late in the night on Thursday in the remote area of the thick forest and it was still going on in the early hours of Friday.
According to sources, a team of the police was in the forest on a search mission in the National Park zone. Even as the team was in the line of its regular combing exercise, they allegedly opened fire on them and a fierce gun duel ensued. Currently, the conflict between the two parties is reported to be still underway.
Though the confrontation is not yet officially recognized by the authorities, the local reports and preliminary field data indicate that the situation is tense in the region. Communication is also low because of the dense forest which covers and also the distance to the area where the fight is taking place which no details of anybody getting killed or injured on both sides are released yet.
In recent months, security forces stepped up their activities along the border areas of Bijapur and Dantewada with an aim to drive out Naxal elements out of their sanctuaries. The region has been the region where movements of armed insurgents are common phenomena and the region has been a hotbed of Naxal activity in the past.
When the operation is finally over and more information is made known, the authorities shall come out with a formal statement. In the meantime, the incident is the eye-opener of how challenging the fight against Naxal extremism of the Red Corridor in India remains.
