Raipur: The Chhattisgarh Election Commission will likely air a press conference this afternoon at 03:00 PM to discuss the urban local body and panchayat elections. At the same briefing session, officials will reveal the election dates and other relevant information. As soon as the dates are announced, the Model Code of Conduct will be implemented. The voter list, called the final list, was compiled on the 18th of January, and both polls are likely to be over by the end of February.

This time, during the elections, the urban local body elections in Chhattisgarh will be conducted through EVMs and the panchayat elections through ballot papers. The state government has recently passed a notification regarding the change in the earlier rules regarding the use of ballot papers to conduct the urban body election through EVMs. What is, however, worthy of note is that the last urban elections that took place in 2019 were done with ballot papers, unlike the same one that was done with EVMs in 2014. The previous Congress-led government tried to bring the usage of ballot papers, which EVMs have now replaced under these provisions.

There will be polls in ten of the overall fourteen municipal corporations in the state. In the recent past, the reservation for mayors of 14 municipal corporations, chairpersons of 54 municipal councils and 124 nagar panchayats was finalised for the 192 urban bodies.

Most significantly, five municipal corporations have kept mayoral seats exclusively for women. Further, woman representation has also been grouped in about 54 municipal councils, where 18 percent of the seats have been reserved for women. Out of these, one is for the candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC) women, one for the candidates belonging to Scheduled Tribe (ST) women, four for Other Backward Classes (OBC) women and nine for the women candidates of the General category.

This all-embracing reservation process points to the new level of the government’s concern for the increased participation of women and the representatives of minorities in the local councils.
