On Sunday morning, a fierce fight erupted between the security forces and the Naxalites in the hilly forest land between Bhejji and Chintagufa in the Sukma district of Chhattisgarh. Reports also record that three Naxalites were killed during the current exchange of fire but this has yet to be confirmed. The events are still strained with intervals of gunshots on both sides.
Based on the readily available information the District Reserve Guard (DRG) had initiated a search operation after receiving intelligence information that indicated that there were Naxalites in the area. The thick wooded area of Sukma where Naxal traffic was common encouraged the troops to launch a combing operation early in the morning. Nevertheless, immediately the DRG personnel approached the suspected zone, Naxalites fired trying to ambush the team.
The DRG reacted instantly, assumed defensive stance and opened fire back with control. The fight that started in the early morning has been continuous with periodic outbursts of gunshots reverberating through the woods. The security agencies are maintaining a high perimeter, such that the Naxalites do not escape and reorganize.
In the meantime, the seniors are keeping a check on the process. Further reinforcements can be sent in accordance with the development of the situation. The terrain and heavy vegetation are some of the problems facing the movement of forces and the DRG personnel are still advancing cautiously.
Sukma has always been a place where Naxal have been operating and these incidences prove the ongoing fight of the security forces to prevent the insurgency activities in this area. More information about the casualties, the weapons retrieved or the names of the killed Naxalites can be given after the operation is over and an official briefing has been given.
