Durg: A day after the Congress party proposed its Nyay Yatra in response to the brutal rape-murder of a six-year-old girl in Durg, Chhattisgarh, Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Vijay Sharma strongly reacted to the opposition party’s use of the tragic incident for political gains. Not only is the move by Congress insensitive, [he] is also likening it to ‘shaming the victim’s family.’

Sharma also criticized the Congress’s plan to hold a justice march from Durg to Raipur between April 18 and 21 and protest the chief minister’s residence. “We don’t understand what Congress is trying to do,” he said. “This is not justice, and this is politics over a tragedy.”

Yet the opposition is standing by its position. The incident also came at a time when Navratri was in full swing, and Chhattisgarh Congress President Deepak Baij expressed deep concern over the incident. “Kanya Bhoj was the time when women across the nation celebrated girlhood, at the same time a young girl was subjected to a horrific crime in Durg,” he said. Baij accused the BJP-led state government of being unable to safeguard women and children’s safety. “Police said that ever since BJP came to power, the incidents of rape, murder, and loot have been on rise.” He added that the Chief Minister and Home Minister are unconcerned about the law and order situation in the state.

The probe has also sparked calls for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation into the case, as Congress has no faith in the current Cops. In the midst of high emotions, the incident has thrown up a serious political fight in Chhattisgarh on governance, public safety and the deployment of tragedies in politics.
