Raipur: Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said today that a de-addiction drive is needed before imposing a liquor ban in the state. He has rightly pointed out that a blanket ban is unlikely to be successful if people are not ready to give up alcohol on their own.

“Not only liquor ban, there should be drug ban. Drug addiction is a social evil, it will end only with the collective leadership of the society”, tweeted CM Baghel.

Alcoholism is a serious problem in Chhattisgarh, with over 20% of the adult population estimated to be addicted to alcohol. The problem is particularly acute in rural areas, where alcoholism is often seen as a sign of masculinity.

A de-addiction drive would need to be comprehensive and long-term. It would need to target both the individual and the community. The individual would need to be helped to understand the nature of their addiction and to develop coping mechanisms. The community would need to be educated about the dangers of alcoholism and to provide support for those who are trying to give up alcohol.

A liquor ban would only be successful if it is supported by a strong de-addiction drive. A ban without a de-addiction drive is likely to lead to an increase in the black market for alcohol and to the development of more dangerous forms of alcohol consumption.

The government of Chhattisgarh should take the lead in launching a de-addiction drive. This would be a positive step towards a healthier and more prosperous state.
