Bastar: At this time of crisis, the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic has affected Maoists the worst in Bastar district of Chhattisgarh. Several infections following deaths were reported from the community. Among those who were infected are senior leaders of the group like Sujatha, Jayalal and Dinesh.
Naxalite communication chief Gaddam Madhukar a.k.a Sobrai died due to COVID-19 on Sunday while being treated. Bastar IG P Sundar raj confirmed the death of the Naxal commander.
Corona-infected Naxalite Sobrai, was arrested by Telangana district Warangal police on June 2. The Sub zonal Naxal region in-charge, Sobrai was caught during a regular road surveillance on Mulugu Cross Road in Warangal. The Naxal head was a resident of village Kondaplli in Komaram Bhim district of Telangana. A reward of 8 lakh rupees was named for clues on his whereabouts.
On interrogation, Sobrai revealed that he was infected with the virus and would surrender, as he was willing to get treated. He also revealed that several Naxals were infected with the virus, but were desisted to get treated outside their region. It was also reported that Tamma villagers protesting against the opening of camps at Silager in Sukma-Bijapur in Chhattisgarh were also infected with the virus.
Following his interrogation, he was screened for the virus and admitted to a local hospital in Warangal.
