Gwalior: The Risali Municipal Corporation political scenario has received another major twist with the Congress councillors joining the other side. In the latest turn of events, the corporator of Ward 28, Dr. Seema Sahu, who is also an important part of the Mayor-in-Council (MIC) in charge of the Women and Child Development Department, has formally quit the Congress to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Dr. Sahu went to the house of Member of Parliament Vijay Baghel, where she was officially joined the BJP. MP Baghel, Durg Rural MLA Lalit Chandrakar and Durg District BJP President Surendra Kaushik were present on the occasion of the joining ceremony and welcomed her into the party fold.

Already, four Congress corporators had quit the party earlier, citing a lack of satisfaction over the leadership and working style of the Mayor. Dr. Sahu is the latest in the list of upset Congress members in Risali. She represented VIP Nagar (Ward 28) as a Congress legislator and was at one time viewed as a serious candidate for the mayoral office, a reserve of women belonging to the Other Backwards Classes (OBC) category.

Her Elderly relations also gave her a good chance because her family member, Tamradhwaj Sahu, was the Home Minister in the state government. But later, the party announced the name of Shashi Sinha as their mayoral candidate, much to the disappointment of Dr. Sahu and her supporters.

Dr. Sahu alleges that the incumbent mayor has not been able to bring the MIC members and councillors into confidence, which has resulted in continued simmering of discontent within party ranks. This leadership vacuum was one of the key factors, she said, in her decision to quit Congress and join the BJP, which, according to her, is more accommodating and better organised in terms of working environment.

BJP considers her induction as its strength in the civic body in view of future elections.
