Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi told the Assembly that talks are going on with the Chhattisgarh government on the Mahanadi water dispute through ministerial-level committees.
He stated that three secretary-level meetings have already taken place in New Delhi, as have eleven joint technical committee meetings. Responding to questions from MLAs Ranendra Pratap Swain and Arun Kumar Sahu, the Chief Minister emphasized that while the matter is pending before the tribunal, both states are engaging in discussions with a positive attitude.
Majhi stated that Odisha has formed a technical committee and is continuing discussions with Chhattisgarh through the ministerial-level system. He stressed that the government understands the importance of the issue and is committed to finding a solution.
Regarding the issue of water sharing, the Chief Minister stated that negotiations with Chhattisgarh are still ongoing. Since the matter is sub judice, accurate data on the impact of water sharing on agriculture and other sectors for the 2025-26 Rabi season cannot be provided. However, he noted that the state government has taken several steps since 2024 to address this issue.
Majhi reiterated that the Mahanadi is the lifeline of Odisha and the government is taking the dispute very seriously, and is continuously making efforts to protect the water interests of the state.
