Jabalpur: On Monday, there was a significant controversy at Chitrakoot, which is Jagdalpur’s most famous tourist destination in Chhattisgarh. Verma, the SDM, issued a seal on the village-operated toll naka because he considers it illegal. Tourists who enter the Chitrakoot waterfalls and park their vehicles have paid the naka fees for a long period.

People felt upset about the move, most of all the members of the committee governing the naka. Chitrakoot road was blocked by the committee, led by Bhanwar Maurya, upon his orders at Mardum Chowk, and a protest against the administration was held. He claims that, according to the decision made at a Gram Sabha in March, a different committee has been set up because the previous committee was involved in corruption. Nevertheless, nothing was done to the previous committee, and its successor faced multiple obstructions.

She blamed the SDM for acting based on personal displeasure because the new committee allegedly did not set up enough services for his guests, resulting in the sealing of the hotel. For almost five hours, the protest went on in the direct sunlight, which caused problems for the tourists stuck by the road.

The SDM, Tehsildar, SDOP, and the police station in-charge were all sent to the scene to speak with the protesters. Even so, the villagers remained where they were. In the end, SDM Verma ordered the police to break up the protestors by force. After the police cleared the road, they took the demonstrators to the Lohandiguda police station.

Verma explained that the naka was not being conducted legally, so he took action. It was argued that as the committee had not been officially registered, many of the signatures on the Gram Sabha resolution were those of committee members.
