Bilaspur: World Environment Day is globally celebrated every year on June 5 and is the United Nations’ principal amplifier to encourage awareness and action for the protection of the environment. The theme for this year is ‘Ecosystem Restoration’. 

The Chhattisgarh government has introduced a team of 50 members on the occasion of World Environment Day called Special 50,aimed  to restore the environment. The team so far developed 2 harrier gardens, 17 kitchen gardens with 5,423 plantations. The team strives to strengthen and protect the ecosystem.

Labelling trees as ‘Heritage in nature’, Government official E. Raghavendra Rao has been working to rejuvenate the ecosystem under the guidance of Tarundhar Diwan, Professor, Department of Information and Technology at Science College.

The team additionally monitors the water bodies of the state along with the trees. It appeals to people to practice appropriate irrigation practices. The team also introduced the ‘Plastic Hatao campaign’ under which it effectively monitored 625 households. 

The Red Cross Society also took an initiative and distributed medicinal saplings to the youth in Bilaspur and planted several medicinal plants at various places.
