Balod: On Friday, students and parents organized a peculiar demonstration in the district at Kusumtola Secondary School by barring the gates of the school and lighting candles on the necessity of hiring more teachers. The children, in a bid to get the education department to act faster, and together with their guardians, sat outside the school chanting slogans in the rain.

Reports indicate that the school is hosting 51 students now. Previously, the school had three teachers; however, upon the current promotion of the headmaster to a different position, two teachers were left at the school. This has left the academic program in much distress, causing frustration to the students and their parents. Consequently, they resolved to close the gates of the schools and go on a sit-in demonstration.

Personnel, mainly police and the local tehsildar, reached the place soon after they were apprised about the protest. The tehsildar tried to calm down the agitating parents and students and promised that their grievances would be brought to the notice of the top echelons of the education department and addressed accordingly.

After negotiations, the protesters unlocked the school gate. The students, however, declined to get into the classrooms and carried on with their demonstration outside the school, making slogans against the lack of teachers. The administration and other teachers, on the other hand, were still within the school premises.

The case points out the current realities of what rural schools are experiencing, which include teacher shortages and infrastructure issues. According to parents, even after numerous requests, nothing has been done concretely either to fill the gaping hole that has been left by the vacant post, leaving them with no option but to stage such dramatic actions. It is now up to the education department to handle the case promptly in order to regain normalcy and avert any further interference with the learning among the students.
