NEW DELHI: The unanimously passed reservation amendment bill is set to undergo a delegation as Chhattisgarh Governor Anusuiya Uikey is likely to visit New Delhi. On her three-day visit, the CG Governor is expected to hold talks with the President of India Draupadi Murmu on December 20th at 11 am. It is being speculated that the reservation amendment bill will undergo a discourse with PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

On December 3th, the CG Vidhan Sabha unanimously passed the reservation amendment bill adopting voice vote in the House. The bills have so far not received any approval by the state governor.

The Chhattisgarh Public Service (SC, ST, OBC Reservation) Amendment Bill and Chhattisgarh Educational Institutions (Reservation in admission) Amendment Bill are meant for quota in government jobs and admission. As per the bills, Scheduled Tribes (ST) will get a quota of 32 per cent, Other Backward Classes (OBC) 27 per cent, and Scheduled Caste (SC) 13 per cent, while 4 per cent has been provisioned for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) in public employment and admissions in educational institutions.

Concerns were raised for the ruling Congress when the Chhattisgarh High Court in September this year set aside the previous Raman Singh-headed BJP government’s 2012 order to raise the quota to 58 per cent in government jobs and admissions in educational institutions, observing that reservation exceeding the 50 per cent ceiling was unconstitutional. The decision halted the recruitment process for government jobs triggering a massive protest particularly by tribals whose quota came down to 20 per cent from 32 per cent following the order.
