Raipur: The inspection process for the Mahanadi Dispute is expected to begin soon, with the first phase to last from 18 April to 22 April. This has been decided to ensure that the disputes between Odisha and Chhattisgarh will be resolved as soon as possible. The first phase of this inspection has already started, and the second phase will be done from 29 April to 3 May.
These two inspections will be done from the Chhattisgarh border, from Raigarh to Mahanadi. Once these inspections have been completed, the Odisha state inspections will occur. This dispute arose when the Odisha Government complained about the lack of water flow before and after the monsoon. They also released an application related to water distribution.
The Supreme Court intervened in this matter in 2018 and launched the Mahanadi Water Dispute Tribunal on 12th March. It has also been reported that the Chhattisgarh Government has also filed a complaint regarding the water distribution of the Mahanadi Basin. They have demanded the water be equally distributed.
The tribunal has almost reached its deadline, which has been extended by the Union Minister till December 2024. Thirty-six court hearings have taken place for the Mahanadi Water Dispute Tribunal.
