On the occasion of Gaura Gauri puja in Chattisgarh’s Durg district, the chief minister of the state got whipped 5 times as part of the ritual “strikes of sonte” performed by a tribal local head Birender Thakur. Every year, CM Bhupesh Baghel visits the tribal areas of the state and takes part in these celebrations to “avert evil” from the life of the people of the state. This puja is performed on the night of Diwali and the tradition of whipping was started by Bharosa Thakur who was the father of Birender Thakur.
Uploading a video of the ceremony and the whipping on social media, CM Baghel wrote, “The sota strike and the discharge of traditions.” He further tweeted, “Reaching the villages of Janjgiri and Kumhari Basti today, worshipping Gauri-Gaura and wishing for the happiness and prosperity of the people of the state.” He was also seen interacting with several media houses. He termed the ritual a “beautiful tradition” and said, “This beautiful tradition is celebrated for the prosperity of all. I believe that the occasion represents equality and that’s why this is celebrated as everyone is equal before the almighty.”
CM Baghel also bought sweets and firecrackers from local shops during the Diwali and Dhanteras festivities on Saturday as he promoted the local manufacturers. In one of his interactions with a leading daily, he was heard saying, “With the return of normalcy after COVID, markets are witnessing crowds. Best wishes to the people on the occasion of Dhanteras and Diwali. I purchased diyas, idols, sweets, and firecrackers for Diwali. I extend Diwali wishes to all.” Speaking about Diwali allowances, he further added, “Our government transferred funds to farmers, and laborers and gave Dearness Allowance to government employees.”
