The HC on September 19th had set aside the decision to raise the quota to 58% in government jobs and educational institutions and said that reservations exceeding the 50% ceiling is “unconstitutional”. The decision was taken by a bench comprising of Chief Justice Arup Kumar and Justice PP Sahu.
The BJP government led by Dr Raman Singh had increased the reservation to 58% in the state. Then the reservation of the Scheduled Caste (SC) community was reduced from 16 per cent to 12 per cent, it was increased for Scheduled Tribes and (STs) to 32 per cent and the quota for Other Backward Castes remained stagnant at 14 per cent.
