Chhattisgarh: Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has asked the state governments to remove check posts at the state borders, stating that after the rolling of goods and service tax (GST) in July 2017, there is no longer a need to have regular check posts.
Last week, Shashi Bhushan, sent a letter to principal secretaries of several states inclusive of Chhattisgarh that stated that implementation of GST has distinctively sorted the tax collection for inter-state travellers, thereby permanent check posts at state borders should be sealed off. It further stated that the ministry now has access to online data with respect to the vehicles and drivers through portal VAHAN and SARATHI.
The centre has asked the states to intimate it about the present status, regarding the removal of check posts at their borders at the earliest. Chhattisgarh has 16 inter-state barriers along its borders with Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha and Jharkhand. As per the orders issued by the Road transport department, authorities would have to seal check posts at Patekohra, Chhota Manpur, Manpur, Chilfi, Khamharpali, Bagbahra, Kenchi, Dhanwar, Ramanuganj, Ghuritola, Chanti, Rengarpali, Shankh, Lavakera, Konta and Dhanpunji.
According to officials, all BJP run states have called off collecting tax at inter-state borders in 2017. However, Chhattisgarh in 2018, after being taken over by Congress restarted the check post to maintain surveillance on overloading of vehicles and smuggling.
