Dhamtari: The Nagar Panchayat of Kurud has stepped up its campaign against illegal encroachments, which have long been causing problems to the available public places and traffic movement. In the last week, a special municipality team has been busy in the Hindi-belt areas, topless unauthorised stalls, hoardings, flex banners, sheds, and name plates erected on the roadsides, with its bulldozer action.
In the continuing drive, the officials have removed more than 500 illegally parked carts, around 300 flex banners, and over 30 shed-like make-shifts with the help of a bulldozer. This massive exercise follows the issuance of repeated warnings to shopkeepers who had been ignoring the occupation of public roadways even after receiving official notices.
These illegal installations had seriously compromised the flow of traffic within the town, and commuters as well as pedestrians were finding it hard to use the roads without any incidents. Even after a warning from the authorities, many vendors still persisted in carrying on business by establishing shops on footpaths and roads, thereby causing traffic jams and nuisance to the ordinary citizens.
Chief Municipal Officer (CMO) Mahendra Raj Gupta has said that the anti-encroachment exercise will go on till June 12. He further clarified that any shopkeeper who will in the future be found blocking the public ways or roads with illegal structures will be dealt with strictly according to the law.
The municipal body is further trying to reduce inconvenience to the displaced vendors by providing them with organized and alternative places where they can carry on their business legally.
The bold initiative has left traders within the Kurud region stirring. Nevertheless, the endeavor has been received well by numerous residents of the area, as they regard it as an essential measure to be taken to optimize traffic conditions in the city and ensure order on the streets. The surgery is a demonstration of the administration’s determination to take back the streets belonging to the people and simplify the infrastructure of the town.
