The Mahasamund Municipal Council is being questioned again after it allowed the construction of a new concrete road for Rs 31.62 lakh in a place where people shouldn’t be building. The 400-meter-long road is being built in Ward No. 28, which is right in front of the Collectorate Colony area in Machewa. It is commonly known that some land and property dealers illegally sold and planned plots in this area no official permission.
The proposal for the road construction was approved when Rashi Mehilang, who was the President of the Congress-run Municipal Council back then, was in office in 2024. However, the new plan didn’t say that the land in question is part of an illegal settlement, making some people wonder if the government was being honest or had not checked everything properly. The engineers responsible for the project management from PWD and those who carried out the site inspections and prepared the plans for the project also did not miss this name.
The situation is worsened by how the current leaders of cities are involved in the matter. Municipal Council President Nikhilkant Sahu and Vice President Devichand Rathi have both become involved in helping out with the project. Sahu recently helped do a ceremony to start building the road in the same unauthorized colony. Surprisingly, he later said that he didn’t know the construction work he ordered took place in an area where it wasn’t allowed. Eighty-four days after signing the contract, the project caterer was told by Vice President Rathi to maintain excellent quality of work.
The incident brings up a lot of worries about how the local government is run and how much of the law might have been broken. When those responsible in government do not know or choose to ignore the rules of such regions, people start to question how choices were made in the past and wonder if some laws were missed. Because of the issue at hand, the district collector has begun an investigation to find out who is responsible and look into the rules of building construction.
