Narayanpur: Here, the country boasts of accomplishments like reaching the moon. However, the village of Ahenar in the Naxal-affected Abujhmad region of Narayanpur district still struggles to get the ‘needed’ things. Unfortunately, an area like Ahenar, which is over Gram Panchayat Kundla, is disconnected from the mainstream of development.
The residents here do not have electricity, clean drinking water, education and healthcare. The villagers claim that there are hardly any efforts made to ameliorate their condition, and neither the administration nor the local panchayat pays any attention to them.
The only primary school building in the village is an old and dilapidated one. The roof leaks with rainfall, and the whole structure is so fragile that wooden poles have been inserted to prevent it from collapsing. But 30 children study under the constant fear of their safety in that school building. Then, during monsoon season, the situation gets worse: Water seeps through the roof because of the leak, and children have to huddle in corners to keep out of the rain. While parents are afraid of sending their children to school as they believe the roof can collapse anytime, it seems that the administration is not giving a damn about it.
The school also has a hand pump supplying iron-contaminated water, which is very dangerous for the children. The villagers claim that the lack of clean drinking water has ruined the health of children, and they are suffering from stomach diseases and skin diseases. In the village there is a transformer, but no electricity in the last two years.
The reality in Ahenar is that the government claims that it spends crores of rupees on development in Naxal-affected areas. It is left in darkness every night, which means children studying by lanterns and oil lamps. Villagers are also left with such healthcare facilities missing, and they have to walk miles.
