Ambikapur: On Thursday, May 30, the Anti-Corruption Bureau Ambikapur squad apprehended a junior passport assistant officer without cause after he accepted a ₹ 8,000 bribe at the Ambikapur passport office. Sankat Mochan Rai, the accused, accepted bribes under the false pretence of verifying passports.

Within ten days, the Ambikapur Anti-Corruption Bureau team has taken two significant steps to combat bribery. The reports stated that at the passport office next to the Ambikapur head post office, a total of four people—including Dolangi resident Israr Ansari—had applied for passport verification. The Junior Passport Assistant Officer, Sankat Mochan Rai, who is employed here, was not doing his task.

For the past month, the applicants have been visiting the office, but their passports have not been verified. Upon reaching out to the police, they requested a bribe of Rs 3,000 for each individual. The applicant filed a complaint about asking for a bribe at the ACB office in Ambikapur because, rather than handing the money, the applicant intended to have him arrested while accepting a bribe.

The audio recording of the victims’ and the officer’s interaction was heard by ACB officials. After it was established that the passport office employee had requested a bribe, the planned action was put into motion. Applicant Israr Ansari stated that the Junior Passport Assistant Officer assured him that passport verification would be completed once he consented to pay Rs 2000 per person rather than Rs 3000.

Based on this, the applicant was sent to the passport office next to the main post office, which is situated at the old bus terminal in Ambikapur, where ACB agents gave him chemical notes worth Rs 8,000. The ACB officers were ready and apprehended the official immediately after he accepted a Rs 8,000 bribe in the office.

The officer was taken into custody by the ACB squad once all required processes were finished at the office. DSP Pramod Khes of the Anti-Corruption Bureau in Ambikapur is the person in charge of this action. Let us inform you that ten days or so ago, two personnel suspected of accepting bribes were taken into custody by the Anti-Corruption Bureau team when they stormed Ambikapur’s municipal and village investment offices. The Anti-Corruption Bureau staff is always taking action against those who accept bribes.
