Four people died and one was seriously injured after their car went into a deep gorge along the Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh on Sunday in a tragic mishap in the Kullu district. It happened in an area around Rahninala under heavy and continuous rain, which has interfered with normal life in the area.
The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) K.D. Sharma said that the car that was occupied by five people fell off the road, possibly because of the slippery situation that occurred due to the downpour and fell down the mountain slope. Rescue campaigns also started, and emergency teams were dashing to the spot in order to help the victims. As four passengers were pronounced dead on the spot, one person was saved and is presently being treated in critical condition.
Names of the victims are still not established, and police are trying to get more details about the passengers and their journey. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said he was grief-stricken after the incident, terming it heartbreaking. He also promised the citizens that the injured are undergoing medical treatment and the local administration has been guided to offer all the support they need.
At the same time, continuous rain is causing havoc in the state. According to the State Emergency Operation Centre, many roads are blocked by landslides as well as other damage as a result of the rains. Kullu district is the worst affected, and 39 roads are down already in subdivisions, Banjar and Nirmand in Kullu, and this seriously affects transportation and rescue.
The accident raises concerns about the increasing dangers of travelling in mountainous areas during the monsoon season, prompting people to call once again to be careful in this process and strengthen road safety.
