On the night of late Friday, a tragic road accident took the lives of nine members of a family including six children after their car fell into a well on the road that had no warning signs in the Dindori region. It happened in locality of Shivajinagar where the lack of visibility and ignorance regarding the existence of the open well allegedly caused the deadly accident.
The police officials said that the victims had been coming back to a private coaching institute after attending a gathering in Dindori town in a multi-utility vehicle (MUV) in which they were travelling. This is because the driver is thought to have failed to see the open well as the vehicle was driving through a dark stretch of the road and thus the vehicle deviated off the road and plunged into the well.
Immediately after the incident, rescue efforts commenced and the locals and authorities rushed to the scene. On-scene shots depicted huge numbers of people as emergency personnel took almost two hours to recover the submerged car and its occupants. The bodies were later recovered past midnight and carried to a local government hospital where all the nine victims were pronounced dead.
According to police inspector Bhagwan Mathure, no one was able to get out of the vehicle, which had been submerged and there were very minimal chances of survival.
Devendra Fadnavis was saddened by the incident, terming it heart wrenching, and announced financial support of 5 lakh rupees to the families of the victims.
The government is most likely to inspect safety measures within the area so that future accidents are avoided.
