Mumbai: The Badlapur case will come up for hearing today before the Bombay High Court, which has taken it up suo motu on very grave charges of sexual assault of two four-year-old girls by a cleaning staff of a local school. The bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Prithviraj Chavan of the court will follow aspects like the ‘delay’, an area that has been an issue of outrage.
The case has caused a lot of stir in Badlapur, where demonstrators have taken to the streets, and well over seventy people have been arrested in the last two days. The demonstrations have raised awareness of how the case is being addressed, hence an increased police mobilization to address the situation to avoid anarchy.
As a result of the incident and the MVA’s perceived failure to deal with the matter properly, the MVA has called for a statewide ‘Maharashtra Bandh’, which is slated for August 24. Due to the severity of the assault and the law and order situation that followed, the MVA decided to call for the bandh. Shiv Sena UBT MP Sanjay Raut said that someone needs to look into the law and order situation rather than how political parties are finalising the seat-sharing ratiocination, which may reflect the public unrest and political bend of the case.
The accused, who works as an attendant at the Badlapur school where the alleged incident happened last week, was arrested on 17 August. A local court has allowed the police custody of the man up to August 26. The probe is currently under a Special Investigation Team (SIT). As a result of this case, the school involved has dismissed several of its employees. At the state level, three policemen have been dismissed for handling the investigation incorrectly.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said everyone would be given justice on the issue soon, and the legal procedure would be quick, and the victim would get the punishment with the Bombay HC hearing.
