On Monday, a bomb threat email was received by the Nainital District Court, and caused a large-scale security operation with the building evacuated and a comprehensive search undertaken before the government stated that the threat was a hoax. The email was sent to the official email address of the district judge, which was an immediate response by the law enforcement agencies.

Police officials said that the district judge sounded alarm after getting an email that stated that 12 RDX based improvised explosive devices (IEDs) had been placed in his chamber and would blow up in a few moments. There was even a warning in the message about the execution of Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) reservation in Tamil Nadu and urged the officials to leave the court premises by 12:15 pm.

The threat was so serious that the court complex was evacuated by the police teams in a short period of time, and a massive search operation was initiated. Bomb disposal teams and dog teams inspected the judges and lawyers chambers as well as the whole court acre to secure the safety. This was conducted as a preventive measure and other courts in Haldwani and Ramnagar also conducted security inspections.

The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manjunath TC has confirmed that the email was short and vague but insisted that the government took the matter very seriously because the place was very sensitive. After inspecting the suspicious items thoroughly without finding any suspicious objects or explosives, the authorities announced the threat to be a hoax.

Law enforcers are currently trying to track the source of the email and the person who sent it. This has been done to increase security as precaution and inquiries are still underway to avoid such incidents in future.
