Rahul Narwekar of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) becomes the Speaker of the 15th Maharashtra Legislative Assembly without contest on Monday after filing his nomination on Sunday. The Maha Vikas Aghadi, which is the opposition, also did not participate in the election to enable Narwekar to gain the seat which he took without the buck stopping him. It is Narwekar’s second stint as the Speaker, though he served as the Speaker of the 14th Maharashtra Assembly for two and a half years. He was re-elected at the recent state assembly polls from the Colaba assembly seat in Mumbai.
The election for Speaker is just before an expected confidence motion on the new government’s strength in the Assembly in the state. Subsequently, Governor CP Radhakrishnan shall move a motion for thanks on a message in both houses of the Maharashtra Legislature.
People who knew Speaker Rahul Narwekar during his first term as Speaker will know what he had been doing in the ongoing political events in the state. Last year, he gave a verdict, deciding that the Eknath Shinde-led faction was the real Shiv Sena after the party split. Narwekar also continued that the emanation headed by Ajit Pawar was the original NCP, which was formed by Sharad Pawar.
The latest Maharashtra assembly poll was a clear win for the Mahayuti alliance of the BJP, Shiv Sena & the NCP were soundly thrashed. The coalition obtained a thumping victory as it bagged over 230 of the 288 seats in the assembly, and the opposition MVA contained only 46 seats. This magnificent victory indicates the way for the new government formation to justify a majority on the floor in the following test.
