Results of the civic polls were announced on Saturday with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning the Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) elections against all expectations by winning 14 council wards out of a total 20. Meanwhile, the Peoples Party of Arunachal (PPA) performed well in the Pasighat Municipal Council (PMC) elections with five out of eight wards being won by the party according to the State Election Commission (SEC) secretary, Taru Talo.
The Congress opposition received a blank in both civic organizations and it lost all seats in Itanagar and Pasighat. The BJP won 14 seats in the IMC out of which four were uncontested as the candidates were elected earlier without opposition. The rest six seats in the Itanagar civic body were distributed in other parties and independents. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) obtained three seats, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) two seats and another seat was obtained by an Independent candidate.
Female candidates had a big presence in the Itanagar Municipal Corporation as they secured 10 out of the 20 seats, which underlines the greater representation of the female population in urban local governance. It was interesting to note that four of the BJP candidates had been already declared to have been elected unopposed to the IMC even before the polling.
The PPA controlled most of the wards in the Pasighat Municipal Council by securing five wards. The BJP was only able to get two seats and there was one ward that was won by an Independent. There was also good performance of women candidates in Pasighat, four out of eight seats were won by the women candidates in the municipal council.
Both the IMC and PMC elections applied Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in polling. Alongside the civic polls, votes of the panchayat elections are being counted. These are 186 Zilla Parishad Member (ZPM) and 1,947 Gram Panchayat Member (GPM). As the panchayat polls are being conducted through ballot papers, the ultimate results will take a long time.
