A big political scandal was created in Assam when a video emerged which claimed that a congress leader was singing the Bangladesh national song, Amar sonar Bangla, in a district level party meeting in Sribhumi, a region along the Bangladesh border. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has Wednesday made a scathing indictment against the Congress which it has said indulges in appeasement politics to attract a specific vote bank.
BJP spokesman, Shehzad Poonawala, accused the congress of formally starting to assist the Bangladeshi infiltrators and being involved in a concerted campaign to separate and corrupt the unity of India. He added, the Congress is openly supporting it at the time when Bangladesh talks of partitioning India. This has turned into a preconceived plan of Congress and the Opposition.
Poonawala also attributed the controversy to the previous statements of the Congress leadership Sam Pitroda and Priyank Kharge, who said that the party approach was based on competitive appeasement politics. He said on the one hand, the Congress offends Assam and helps Bangladeshi infiltrators. On the other hand, in the situation where our government identifies, removes and deports illegal immigrants, the Congress protects them instead.
The Assam wing of the BJP uploaded the undated video to social media and alleged that it was of the Congress leader singing the Bangladeshi anthem at a party. The video became viral in a short time, and BJP leaders and supporters encouraged it to a significant extent.
In reaction to this controversy, congress MP and Assam unit head Gaurav Gogoi defended the leader claiming that the song had initially been written by Rabindranath Tagore and that it was a symbol of the cultural and emotional identity of people speaking Bengali language. BJP has offended the Bengali language, culture and Bengali people. They are hypocrites by the fact that they do not know any thing about Tagore. He made it clear that it was a piece of Bengali heritage rather than a political one being sung.
