The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Karnataka on Wednesday asked Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot to write to the state government and request it to refer the recent murder of a Hindu activist, Gavisiddappa Nayak, in Koppal to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The party claimed that the murder was an element of a “conspiracy at the core” masterminded by the extremist organisations that include Popular Front of India (PFI) and Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI).
BJP legislators in a detailed memorandum handed over at Raj Bhavan said that Nayak, a leader of the Scheduled Tribe community Valmiki group, was brutally murdered on August 3 at 7.30 pm to 8 pm in front of the Syed Nadeemullah Qadri Mosque in the main area of Koppal town. The party stated that the Congress-led state government showed “Soft corner” towards the dangerous elements and did not stop the attack.
The BJP said the prime accused, Sadiq Kolkar, had gone around with swords and machetes in Koppal just a day before the murder and uploaded videos to social media. The party claimed that the crime was possible because of the negligence on the part of the police by failing to execute preventive arrests. The memorandum added: the peace and tranquility of Koppal were disturbed because of this brutal and cold-blooded murder.
BJP said Nayak had initially been summoned to a highway, where he was killed, eventually in town. The mode of attack was attached, which included beheading and slitting the throat, which was termed as being similar to the incidents of killings of the Hindu activists earlier in coastal Karnataka. The motive, as accused by the party, was supposed to instil fear and give the message to the Hindus that they can do it with impunity.
The BJP warned that extremist outfits that operate in coastal districts have come to the Kalyana Karnataka region, and the threat must be dealt with at an early stage, as it would extend to the North Karnataka region in the future.
