A function to honor the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Satna, Madhya Pradesh, had an ugly incident on Friday, when the BJP MP Ganesh Singh purportedly slapped a municipal crane operator at the event. The accident took place in Semriya Chowk in the Run for Unity programme, held to honor Patel.

Based on the videos which have gone viral on the social media, the MP was also raised using a hydraulic crane to laurel a statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. But when the crane started to lower down, it suddenly jumped and stopped half-way in the air several seconds. Upon its safe landing, an angry Ganesh Singh called on the crane operator who was Ganesh Kushwaha and slapped him before the entire crowd which gasped.

Eyewitnesses have said that the jolt happened due to a small technical malfunction in the hydraulic system. The operator merely had to do his job. The jerking was mechanical not human. But the MP lost his temper, said one of the municipal workers who happened to be on the spot.

The recording of the incident immediately became viral and opposition leaders and citizens came out in criticism of the behaviour of the MP, branding it unbecoming of a representative of the people in the political arena. But the representative of the MP, Neeta Sonia, justified his actions by publishing a social network post, in which he said, The MP simply slapped him. His legs and arms ought to have been broken. So had he fallen out of that height, who should have been answerable?

The event has already caused much controversy on the abuse of power and responsibility by government officials and actions and further shadowed what was supposed to be a unity and leadership day. Local authorities have not confirmed the fact that any formal complaint is made against the MP.
