Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday went on the offensive on Congress led Karnataka government over the reports that high-risk inmates in the Parappana Agrahara Central Jail in Bengaluru were being given unauthorised privileges, such as mobile phone, TV set, special meals and what was reportedly a VVIP lifestyle.
BJP spokesperson, Shehzad Poonawala, accused the Congress government of being soft on criminals and even those who are involved in terrorism in a press conference in New Delhi. This is what BJP and Congress are not, one is fighting terrorism and the other side is celebrating terrorists he said. Joking at the expense of the ruling party, Poonawala further stated, Congress has introduced a new promise; conversion of prisons to party houses.
Poonawala aired some video clips that purportedly were shot within the jail which inferred that the inmates are using mobile phones and living luxuriously. In one of the videos, he claimed that one of the accused ISIS recruiter was taken on camera with a cell phone in his cell. He stated that such terrorists must be segregated in high security cells, yet they are still able to communicate with the outside world and carry on with their recruitment efforts, here.
In another video, a convicted serial rapist Umesh Reddy was reportedly being served his favorite food with a television in the background and holding a mobile phone. Another clip that was alleged by Poonawala showed inmates celebrating with food and alcohol in the prison.
The BJP insisted on accountability, and wanted the Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah and the Home Minister, G. Parameshwara to resign over the incident. Poonawala said that such privileges are not possible without the knowledge of the state government.
On its part, CM Siddaramaiah admitted that there is a problem, and that Home Minister Parameshwara had called a meeting to discuss the situation.
